Workshop Wednesday- My Reading Groups!

I {LOVE} teaching Reading (I know, I’m crazy, right?) So I am excited to share how Reading Workshop works in my class!

Here’s a glimpse into my Reading Workshop–
My Reading Workshop mostly occurs during Daily 5 time. I teach reading strategies to my whole group first, then my students are in colored groups based on their DRA level and other data. We do 3 Daily 5 stations Monday, 2 Tuesday. Wednesday I do a reteach, review, and practice with whole class, usually. Thursday we do 3 Daily 5 stations, and Friday we do 2 again! It works great!
My stations are : Listen to reading (RAZ kids, Study Island, or Bookflix and TruFlix), Work on Writing (Writing Prompts, Whole class journals, or free writes.) Read to self (independent read, using Story Fans to answer 2 questions a day), Word Work (Spelling activities, or right now we are doing Reading Olympians!), and Buddy Reading which we also call “Reading with Mrs. Cap.”
It’s during Buddy Reading that I do my Reading Workshop. The content of this changes based on what we are studying. When we were studying elements of a story, I read a chapter book on level with each group and we practice each skill we learned as a whole class. This is probably the toughest one I do because I am trying to keep track of 5 different books at a time, so organization is important. While we are doing informational text, we read nonfiction books together and practice the strategy, or they work on their Famous American projects one-on-one with me, by looking up information in books. During Figurative Language and Poetry, we choral and echo read poetry, working on fluency.

How do I keep it all organized? Here’s how:

I have a reading binder for each class:

(I LOVE Harry Potter, so of course I loved the CAFE suggestion of calling it a Pensieve, perfect!)

I keep a Reading Group schedule in the front of my binder. I keep it in a page protector and use a wet erase marker to write on it. I keep it pretty simple so I actually can get it done. I write down the date I will meet with them and what I will be doing. After we’re done, I write down what page we left off on, or book, or task card, whatever it is!

I have 5 groups, so there are 5 tabs. Each group is a color name, so their tab is their group color! Same thing on the charts!

I then use this tab to keep track of assignments (excuse most of these being blank, we started anew after break!) I don’t write down their names, I just use numbers to make it easier to keep track off, and quicker!

The first page of each groups tab is a overall group anecdotal notes page. Here I put more detail on our meetings. I write down the date we will meet, and the teaching points I will cover (this could be skills, pages, numbers, books, etc.) I also write down any questions that I may want to ask them. I then write down the specific skills they struggled with, and what they mastered. As a group, we make a goal for our next meeting, and I put what we will do next, and when.

I also have a tab for each student in the group with their own notes recording page similar to the one here. On that I record specific struggles for that student (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, vocab) and what they need specific extra help with.
I do show my groups this pages and discuss them with them. So far, my system has worked well! How do you do your workshops? Link up with Jivey!

  4. Thank you so much for your post! This is one I will definitely be pinning as it is a great resource for me. I love how you have everything broken down and organized…I am still working on getting it all together and your post will be a fantastic thing for me to come back to!

    PS you said during independent time students use Story Fans to answer 2 questions daily…what are your story fans?

  7. The page protector is such a good ides! I use a gradebook sheet to keep track of my center rotations, but I could start using this page protector over it to save on paper!
